Both of his parents were verbally and emotionally abusive to him. Throughout BoJack's childhood, Beatrice and Butterscotch would regularly be at each other's throats in front of BoJack, to the point where their fighting was just an everyday routine for him. One night, BoJack kept his parents up all night with his crying and after another heated argument with Butterscotch, Beatrice took some pills with vodka, making her drunk enough to direct her first slight toward her son, saying 'You'd better be worth all this.'
When BoJack was just a little baby, his parents, while both trying their damndest to be good parents to their son, would get into heated arguments with each other over their financial situation but they both made sure not to take out their anger on the baby, although Beatrice struggled with this. Horseman was born on January 2nd, 1964 to Beatrice and Butterscotch Horseman.
